Monday Watercolors In-Studio Class Recap

Monday mornings are a thrill with my Whimsical Watercolors class in my studio here in Harvard, MA. We enjoy tunes, good company, great stories and of course, painting watercolors!

Yesterday we started class looking at our homework assignments, which was to create a warm color doodle page as well as a cool color vertical doodle page. These ladies did a fabulous job! I’m impressed with their imaginations and the interesting translation that each artist presented. I love seeing the different ideas! Spectacular!

We spent the class time working with color value and building it using a single color in our mountain ranges. This helped each artist learn how to mix their colors to enhance the depth as we worked. As we painted our mountain ranges, we enjoyed swapping some recipe ideas and learning more about one another. Of course, we also enjoyed listening to the vocal stylings of Bruno Mars!

The second class project focused on using flowers as our main theme and finding interesting shapes and designs within each bloom. Working like this helps students unleash their creativity in a small and confined space so they don’t get overwhelmed, which is a huge focus in my in-studio and online classes. We don’t need to feel stressed out or overwhelmed when creating art!

Finally, our homework assignment for the week is to create a landscape using various techniques that we worked on in our first class last week. From bubble wrap and salt to plastic wrap and wax resist, the artists will be able to choose their tools and colors as they work. I can’t wait to see what they come in with next week!
